Afro Café

Snapshot

Long-running African-inspired café and restaurant in the Salzburg Altstadt. One of the city’s genuinely distinctive independent venues.

The Story

The Afro Café has been part of Salzburg’s café landscape long enough to be considered an institution, which is notable given how thoroughly the city’s food scene defaults to its Central European traditions. It sits on Bürgerspitalplatz in the Altstadt, brings African-inspired flavours and coffee culture to a neighbourhood better known for Konditorei and Wiener Melange, and does so with a warm, colourful atmosphere that feels unlike anything else nearby. Connected to the Afro Coffee brand and its focus on African specialty coffee sourcing, the café carries a genuine point of view rather than a borrowed aesthetic. For visitors who want a break from the traditional Austrian register, this is the most original alternative in the Altstadt.
