The Blaue Gans (Blue Goose) has been an inn on Getreidegasse since 1549. Today it operates as a contemporary art hotel: the same medieval structure where travellers have been sleeping for nearly five centuries now hangs with rotating modern artworks. It is one of the more genuinely interesting places to stay in Salzburg.

The Story

Getreidegasse is most famous internationally as the street where Mozarts Birthplace stands, but it has been a commercial and hospitality corridor for far longer than Mozart’s fame. The Blue Goose opened here as an inn in 1549, during the period when Salzburg’s prince-archbishop was consolidating the baroque urban project that would eventually earn the city its UNESCO designation. The building has served travellers through the city’s full modern history.

The contemporary art hotel concept arrived in recent decades as the current owners chose to make the medieval structure a frame for living art rather than a period piece. The result is a building that holds two things in tension: stone walls and vaulted passages that reflect the 16th century, and works of contemporary painting and sculpture that reflect now. The rotating collection means the interior changes over time; the walls are not decorated, they are curated.

Each room is individually designed, which matters in a city where many hotels default to a “Salzburg charm” aesthetic of regional timber furniture and alpine textiles. The Blaue Gans does not default. Some rooms will suit certain travellers more than others, which makes it worth looking at photos before booking, but also makes it one of the few Salzburg hotels where the room itself is part of the experience.

The location at Getreidegasse 41 puts guests on one of Europe’s most visited pedestrian streets, within a short walk of Mozarts Birthplace, the Salzburg Cathedral, and the main festival venues. The street is busy during the day; quieter at night once the shops close.
