A compact rocky peak directly above Fuschl am See, the first proper Salzkammergut mountain reachable from Salzburg by public transport. Summit in under an hour. At the top, the Fuschlsee opens completely below. The whole excursion fits inside a morning.

The Story

The Salzkammergut begins almost immediately east of Salzburg, and the Ellmaustein is one of the most accessible entry points into it: a real summit, not a hill, reachable without a car and without an early start.

The bus line 150 runs from Salzburg to Fuschl am See centre roughly every thirty minutes and takes around half an hour. The trailhead is in the village. The path climbs through forest before emerging on rocky ground near the summit. The ascent takes under an hour for most walkers, and the gradient is manageable for children with basic footwear.

What makes the Ellmaustein particular is the arrival at the top. The Fuschlsee spreads out directly below in one sudden, unobstructed view: a contained alpine lake set in wooded hills, with Schloss Fuschl visible at its western end. The lake is small enough to see entirely from here, deep blue on clear days, with the Salzkammergut hills receding in layers toward Wolfgangsee and beyond. It is the kind of view that requires almost no effort to appreciate.

The descent returns to the village, which sits at the edge of the lake. On warm days the combination of summit and swim in the Fuschlsee is one of the more complete half-day excursions available from the city.

Visiting

• Location: Above Fuschl am See, approximately 30 km east of Salzburg city.
• Getting there: Bus line 150 from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof or Mirabellplatz to Fuschl am See centre, roughly every 30 minutes, journey around 30 minutes. The trailhead is in the village.
• Hours: Always accessible. Best in clear weather for lake views.
• Cost: Free; bus fare applies.
• Time needed: Around 2 hours total for ascent and descent, plus time at the summit. Allow a half day if combining with the lake.
• Tips: Sturdy shoes recommended for the rocky summit section. Combine with a swim in the Fuschlsee after descent. No facilities at the summit.
