A car-free half-day that combines a genuine summit with a lake swim, reachable from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof by bus in 30 minutes. No car, no guide, no booking needed.

The Story

Bus 150 leaves from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof every 30 minutes and reaches Fuschl am See in about half an hour. From the village, the trail to the Ellmaustein summit takes under an hour at a steady pace. The summit is a rocky viewpoint rather than a mountaineering challenge, and the view takes in Wolfgangsee, Mondsee Lake, and, on clear days, the Dachstein massif to the east.

Coming back down, the Fuschlsee is directly below. The lake is among the clearest in the Salzburg region: cold in early season, swimmable from late June onward, with free public access to the shore. The sequence of bus, short hike, summit view, and lake swim is more complete than most day-trip options within an hour of Salzburg.

For those who want more mountain, Schober (1,328 m) extends the same approach into a full day. The extra climb from the Ellmaustein area adds roughly 2-3 hours. Both peaks return to the same bus stop.

Visiting

Take the 150 bus from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, direction Fuschl am See / St. Gilgen / Bad Ischl. Journey time about 30 minutes. The bus runs approximately every 30 minutes. No booking needed for the hike or the lake. Bring swimming gear, sunscreen, and a light windproof for the summit. The Ellmaustein ascent is suitable for children and casual walkers with basic footwear; the Schober extension requires proper hiking shoes and reasonable fitness. Return on the same 150 bus line. Combine with Schloss Fuschl (visible from the lake) or continue east toward St Gilgen and Wolfgangsee for a longer day.
