A viewing platform 350 metres above the Hallstatter See, reached by funicular from the village shore. The panorama across the lake to the Dachstein massif is exceptional. The 13th-century Rudolfsturm tower stands directly behind it, now a restaurant.
The Story
The funicular from Hallstatt was built to carry tourists up to the salt mine, and the Skywalk was added as a complement to the underground tour. The two are essentially one attraction: you ride the Salzbergbahn up the cliff face, walk a few minutes to the viewing platform, take in the lake, then descend into the mountain via miners' slides and Bronze Age passages at Salzwelten Hallstatt.
The tower directly behind the platform is Rudolfsturm, named for Rudolf IV of Habsburg, who ordered it built in the 14th century to guard the Salzberg above and its precious salt workings. For several centuries it housed the mine administration; it has operated as a mountain restaurant since the 19th century. Its walls have been watching the same lake view considerably longer than any visitor.
The view from the platform runs the full length of the lake and frames the sheer limestone walls of the Dachstein at the southern end. On clear days the scale is a genuine counterpoint to the compressed intimacy of the village below. On overcast days, mist fills the valley and the lake disappears entirely, which is its own kind of spectacle.
For those who prefer not to take the funicular, a marked trail from Hallstatt village climbs to Rudolfsturm in about an hour, with the lake opening in stages as you gain height. The walk is worth considering on its own terms.
Visiting
The Skywalk is reached by the Salzbergbahn funicular from its base station, a short uphill walk from the village centre. Admission to the platform is bundled with the funicular and Salzwelten Hallstatt mine ticket; no separate entry fee applies. The funicular operates from late April through October, with extended summer hours. The platform is exposed and can be cold even in summer. Allow three to four hours if combining the funicular, Skywalk, and mine tour, or around one hour for funicular and platform only. An unmarked hiking alternative climbs from the village in approximately one hour.
