The oldest documented salt mine on earth sits in the mountain directly above Hallstatt. Salt has been extracted here for at least 3,500 years without interruption. Reaching it by funicular from the village shore, then descending via miners' slides into Bronze Age passages, is one of the most layered experiences in the Salzkammergut.
The Story
When archaeologists in the 19th century began to classify the early Iron Age in Europe, they named it after this mine and the settlements around it. The Hallstatt period, running from roughly 800 to 400 BC, is a foundational concept in European prehistory, used in textbooks and papers worldwide. The place that gave the era its name is still operational, still extracting salt from the same mountain where Bronze Age miners left their tools.
Those tools have been found in remarkable states of preservation. The mine's constant interior temperature and the salt itself have kept organic materials intact for millennia: wooden ladders, leather carrying bags, fragments of Bronze Age clothing. The objects recovered here are among the oldest industrial artefacts in Europe, and some are displayed in the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna.
The guided tour takes visitors down the mountain via miners' slides, the same method miners used to move between levels, and into chambers where the geological formations are genuinely beautiful: white and grey rock, translucent brine pools, passages cut by hand thousands of years ago and still in active use. At the centre is a subterranean salt lake.
The experience is distinct from Salzwelten Hallein: smaller in scale, older in character, and more focused on the archaeological dimension of salt extraction than on the theatrical entertainment of the Hallein tour.
Visiting
The mine is reached by the Salzbergbahn funicular from the base station, a short uphill walk from Hallstatt village centre. Combined tickets covering the funicular, Skywalk platform, and mine tour offer the best value. Guided tours run daily from late April through October, with some winter dates available. Tours last approximately 70 minutes. The mine interior is around 8 degrees Celsius year-round: warm clothing and closed-toe shoes are required. Advance booking recommended in July and August. Allow a half day for the funicular, Skywalk, and mine tour combined.
