The desk where Emperor Franz Joseph I signed the declaration of war against Serbia on 28 July 1914 is shown on the guided tour. The same villa is where he first met Elisabeth in 1853 and became engaged to her. The same family still lives in half of it.
The Story
The Kaiservilla started as a Biedermeier house bought by a local physician in 1850. Franz Joseph was engaged to Elisabeth in Bad Ischl in August 1853, which prompted Archduchess Sophie to purchase the property as a gift for her son and order an immediate remodel. Architect Antonio Legrenzi expanded it into an E-shaped plan, the letter chosen deliberately to echo Elisabeth's initial. By 1860 the work was officially finished, though the imperial family had been summering there since 1854, sometimes in rooms that were not yet complete.
Franz Joseph came back every summer for over sixty years. He called Bad Ischl "heaven on earth." He hunted in the mountains behind the town, kept a barometer-lined study to plan his days, and received diplomatic visitors who lodged in the town since the villa had no overnight guest accommodation. The records show that when he and Elisabeth arrived in July 1854, the kitchen was still unfinished.
In July 1914, the declaration of war document was brought to him at Bad Ischl. He signed it at the study desk on 28 July, setting the mechanism of the First World War in motion from a summer retreat in the Salzkammergut. The study, with the desk, is part of the guided tour.
The villa remains partly inhabited. Habsburg descendants occupy one wing; the other half and the Kaiserpark are open to the public from spring through autumn. The park was laid out in 1854 in the English landscape style by court gardener Franz Rauch, who also designed the Marmorschlössl teahouse in 1861 as a private retreat for Elisabeth. That teahouse now operates as a photography museum.
Visiting
At Jainzen 38 in Bad Ischl, a 15-minute walk from the town centre through the Kaiserpark. Open for guided tours from April/May through October; closed in winter. Guided villa tour takes approximately 45 minutes; admission around EUR 23 for adults (confirm current prices at kaiservilla.at). Park and Marmorschlössl (photo museum) accessible separately. Bad Ischl is approximately 50 minutes from Salzburg by train. Pairs naturally with the Eurotherme Bad Ischl for a rest day, or with the broader Salzkammergut lake circuit.
