Lift
A cliff lift in the Altstadt, boring through the Mönchsberg rock face to emerge on the plateau in under a minute. Lower entrance at Gstättengasse 13. Small fee applies.
The Mönchsberg Lift has been punching through the cliff since 1890, though the current glass-enclosed version arrived in 2004. From Gstättengasse, a narrow street tucked behind the old city, you step into what feels like an ordinary lift, the doors close, and sixty seconds later you are standing on a wooded plateau above the rooftops of the Altstadt.
The upper exit opens immediately beside the Museum der Moderne and its terrace café, with the Monchsberg Aussichtsterrasse just steps ahead. Beyond that, forested walking paths run the full length of the Mönchsberg ridge south toward Hohensalzburg Fortress. The Stadtalm café sits a short walk along the plateau. For the price of a lift ticket, visitors step out of one of Europe’s most beautiful historic cities and into a quiet, wooded world above it.
