The main panoramic terrace on the Mönchsberg plateau, reached in under a minute from street level via the Monchsberg Lift. Free to stand on. Faces northeast over the full Altstadt. The most easily reached elevated viewpoint in Salzburg.
The terrace sits directly at the top exit of the Monchsberg Lift, which means most visitors arrive on foot or by lift and find themselves immediately above the city with no gradual ascent to prepare them for the view. That abruptness is part of the appeal. One moment you are in a narrow Altstadt lane; sixty seconds later you are looking down at the Cathedral domes from above.
The view faces northeast and east. The Altstadt lays out clearly below: the dome cluster of the Cathedral and Franziskanerkirche, the steeple of the Kollegienkirche, the curve of the Salzach River catching light, and Kapuzinerberg rising steeply on the opposite bank. On clear days Untersberg fills the southern horizon. This is the view that gives first-time visitors their mental map of the city before they descend into it.
