A simple mountain café and beer garden on the Mönchsberg plateau, beside the Museum der Moderne. Wooden benches, city views, straightforward food and cold drinks. Unpretentious and local.
The name says it directly: Stadt plus Alm, city plus alpine pasture. This is the mountain version of the corner café, transplanted to a wooded plateau above one of Europe’s great baroque cities. There is no design concept here, no curated menu, no queue outside. There are wooden benches, a small terrace with a view across the rooftops, Austrian food at reasonable prices, and cold drinks after the walk up.
The Museum der Moderne sits immediately next door, all clean lines and contemporary architecture. The Stadtalm is the other register entirely: the place that was here before the museum and will probably be here long after the next architectural intervention. Regulars are walkers, dog walkers, people who took the Monchsberg Lift up and want to sit in the open air without spending what a museum café charges, and locals who have been coming for years and see no reason to stop.
Most tourists who visit the museum never find the Stadtalm. It is not hidden, just easily overlooked if you are following the obvious path. That oversight is the regulars’ gain.

Pressed cheese dumpling fried until crisp. The definitive mountain hut appetiser. Served in clear broth (Kaspressknödelsuppe) or dry with salad. Simple, satisfying, first thing walkers order in winter.
