The Story

Motel One built its reputation on a specific trade: you get contemporary design and a good address, and in return you accept that there is no restaurant, no minibar, and no room service. In most cities that trade works adequately. In Salzburg, with the Mirabell location, it works extremely well.

The hotel sits at Elisabethkai 58-60, on the right bank of the Salzach River immediately adjacent to Mirabellplatz. From the front door, Mirabell Gardens is five minutes on foot, the old town is ten, and the main station is manageable on foot or a short bus ride. The terrace looks directly over the Salzach toward the south bank and the rising silhouette of the city. On a clear morning it is one of the better views available to a hotel guest at this price point.

The rooms were remodelled around 2020 and follow the signature Motel One formula: charcoal-grey feature walls, warm lighting, a flat-screen television, air conditioning, and sound-proofed windows that filter the riverside activity effectively. There is no minibar and no in-room safe, which are the honest trade-offs for the price. The bar handles pre-dinner drinks and morning coffee, and the wine list is curated rather than simply functional. Breakfast costs around EUR 12 and is served from the bar area.

The German Motel One brand has attracted something of a cult following among experienced European travellers who have worked out that design quality and address quality do not need to mean luxury pricing. The Salzburg Mirabell property is frequently cited as one of the chain’s better European locations. For visitors who want to be close to the historic core, the gardens, and the riverside without paying boutique hotel rates, it is a straightforward recommendation.
