Perched on a cliff terrace above Hallstatt's lakeshore, the Catholic parish church holds a late-Gothic miners' altar with a theft-and-recovery story, a 12th-century tower capped with a Baroque dome after a 1750 fire, and 15th-century frescoes that most visitors walk past to reach the famous Beinhaus next door.
The Story
A Romanesque chapel stood on this narrow cliff terrace by around 1181, its position dictated by the same shortage of flat ground that defines everything about Hallstatt. The site grew with the salt trade: the bishop of Passau consecrated an expanded church here in 1320, and by 1505 a full late-Gothic nave with pointed arches, a two-aisle plan, and a double choir was complete. The wealth that built it came from the mine above the town.
The most significant artwork inside is the Knappenaltar, the Miners' Altar, a late-Gothic winged altarpiece from around 1520 commissioned by the local mining brotherhood. It was not always in the parish church: it originally stood in the Hauerkapelle at the salt workings and was rescued before a fire could destroy it. The central crucifixion panel is painted on a gold ground; the carved saints include St. Bartholomaeus, the miners' patron, holding a salt barrel. In 1987 four wing paintings were stolen overnight; they were recovered in Italy in 2017 and returned to the church in 2018, now displayed behind reinforced glass.
The tower dates to the 12th century. When a fire gutted it in 1750, the medieval stone cap could not be saved and craftsmen replaced it with a bulbous Baroque helmet. The contrast between the Gothic nave and the Baroque tower crown reads as an accident of history but locals have come to love it as an expression of the town's two-era character. The interior was restored in 2002 to its 1500 appearance.
The church is far less visited than the Beinhaus immediately adjacent, which draws most of the crowds. The frescoes and the altar are quieter propositions.
Visiting
Reached by the covered stairway from Hallstatt's Marktplatz. Free entry. Open daily. Best combined with the adjacent cemetery and Beinhaus for a single 45-minute visit. The Knappenaltar is in the right side of the double choir. The Baroque tower cap is best appreciated from the cemetery terrace. The church is active; Sunday Mass is at 10:30am.
