The mountain above Hallein has been mined for salt since at least 600 BC. The Dürrnberg was one of the richest Celtic settlements in Central Europe, and the wealth it generated is part of why Salzburg exists. The guided underground tour, with its miners' slides and salt-lake raft crossing, is the most entertaining way to understand that history.
The Story
Salzburg gets its name from the Salzach river, and the Salzach gets its name from salt, and the salt came largely from here. The Dürrnberg plateau, 800 metres above sea level directly south of Hallein, was producing salt more than 2,600 years ago. By the late Iron Age it was the centre of one of the densest concentrations of Celtic settlement in the Alps, a community wealthy enough to trade across Europe and bury its dead with extraordinary objects. The grave goods recovered here, ornate bronze vessels, weapons, jewellery, are now in the Keltenmuseum Hallein in the town below.
The mine continued operating through the Roman period, through the medieval salt trade that built the Salzburg archbishops' power, and through the centuries since. The modern show mine is built around the working mine's infrastructure, and guided tours move through the same shafts, just with safety lighting and carefully restored inclines.
The tour itself is physical: visitors descend the mine via wooden slides, the same method miners used to move between levels, ending with a crossing of an underground salt lake by raft. The combination of genuine archaeological significance, actual underground landscape, and the undeniable pleasure of sliding down a mine shaft makes it one of the strongest family-oriented experiences in the Salzburg region.
Visiting in combination with the Keltenmuseum Hallein in the town below completes the picture: the mine provides the physical experience, the museum provides the cultural context for what the Dürrnberg actually was.
Visiting
The mine is on the Dürrnberg above Hallein, reached by car or by shuttle bus from Hallein town. Guided underground tours run daily from April through October, with some winter dates. Tours last approximately 70 minutes. Mine temperature is around 8 degrees Celsius: warm clothing and closed-toe shoes required. Advance booking recommended in peak summer. Hallein is fifteen minutes from Salzburg by S-Bahn; from there, the shuttle or a local bus climbs to the Dürrnberg.
