A small private museum at Villa Trapp in Aigen telling the real story of the von Trapp family. Not the film's version: the actual people, their lives in Salzburg, the flight from Austria in 1938, and what happened after. Included in the Salzburg Card.
The Story
Most of Salzburg's Sound of Music tourism circles the same film locations: the gazebo at Hellbrunn, Mirabell Gardens, the front of Schloss Leopoldskron. Sound of Music World takes a different position. Opened in 2018 beside Villa Trapp in the Aigen district, it focuses on the family who actually lived there, and whose story the musical compressed and sentimentalised.
Georg von Trapp was a decorated k.u.k. navy commander with a career far more interesting than his film portrayal. Maria was a novice dispatched from Nonnberg Abbey to help nurse a sick child, not to serve as the general governess. The family did not escape over the mountains into Switzerland on foot: they took a scheduled train to Italy in September 1938, having obtained the necessary permissions, and emigrated legally. They eventually settled in Stowe, Vermont, where the Trapp Family Lodge operates to this day.
The exhibition was assembled by the owners of the Villa Trapp guest house next door, who developed it as a serious counterpart to the film-location circuit. The result is more intimate and more honest than the larger Sound of Music attractions in the city, and it earns repeat visits from people who came expecting kitsch and found something else.

Combines naturally with the Villa Trapp grounds and guest house next door. Reachable by bus from the old town.
