The Gothic chapel inside Hohensalzburg Fortress was built in 1501-1502 for the garrison troops of Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach. It holds some of the finest surviving Romanesque frescoes in Austria and is the only church in Salzburg you have to pay to enter.
The Story
When Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach ordered a new chapel for his fortress garrison in 1501, his builders completed it in under a year, an unusual pace for medieval construction. The chapel was dedicated to St. George, patron saint of knights and mounted soldiers, a fitting choice for a military stronghold that housed roughly 1,200 residents including craftsmen, servants, and troops.
The interior is more richly layered than the modest exterior suggests. The walls carry Romanesque frescoes depicting Christ, saints, and angels in muted earth tones that have held surprising vibrancy across five centuries. Red marble bas-reliefs from around 1502 line the perimeter, each apostle's drapery carved with careful depth. The star-vaulted dome above the altar draws the eye upward.
Keutschach was not a modest patron. His beetroot coat of arms appears 58 times across the fortress complex, a number that has turned into a challenge for visitors since the day it was pointed out in the guidebooks. Inside the chapel, a marble monument carved in 1515 by Hans Valkenauer shows Keutschach in high relief on Adneter Marmor, a life-size record of the man who transformed the hilltop into a late-Gothic showcase.
The annual Feast of St. George on 23 April still brings a horse procession to the fortress courtyard, with a Patronage Mass in the chapel at 9:45am, continuing a tradition that ties the garrison chapel to its original purpose.
Visiting
Inside Hohensalzburg Fortress, reached by the Festungsbahn funicular or on foot via Festungsgasse. The chapel is included in the standard fortress admission (EUR 13.80 adults in 2025), making it the only church in Salzburg with an entry fee. Open during fortress hours, typically 9:30am to 5pm, with extended hours in summer. The chapel itself takes 10 minutes; plan the full fortress visit as a half-day.
