The Story

Kaigasse runs east from the Alter Markt area toward the foot of the Festungsberg, parallel to the Salzach River and away from the main tourist axis. The address gives Zwettler’s a characteristic that many Altstadt restaurants lack: an actual local clientele, present not because the place has been recommended in a travel context but because it is the neighbourhood Wirtshaus.

The food is traditional Austrian, the kind that Viennese or Salzburg grandmothers would recognise without effort: Schnitzel, Gulasch, Tafelspitz, seasonal soups. The beers are Austrian and local. The prices, around EUR 12-22 for mains, reflect what this kind of place should cost rather than the tourist-zone markup of Residenzplatz.

Visitors who find it tend to return. The combination of honest food, fair prices, and a room that has not been decorated for foreigners makes it one of the more grounding experiences in the old city.
