Grossgmain sits at the foot of the Untersberg on the Bavarian border, half an hour southwest of Salzburg. Two things bring visitors: the Freilichtmuseum Grossgmain, where historic buildings from across Salzburg State have been rebuilt on one site, and a pilgrimage church carrying a late-Gothic altar that is far better than the village’s size would suggest.
The village is a border case in the literal sense. Grossgmain and Bayerisch Gmain were one settlement and one parish before the frontier between Salzburg and Bavaria hardened between them, and the two halves still function as neighbours with a state line running through. The pilgrimage church is the older anchor: its late-Gothic winged altar, with carved relief work in marble, is the kind of object that usually sits in a town rather than a village of this scale.
The Freilichtmuseum Grossgmain is the reason most visitors make the trip. The museum’s principle is straightforward and unusually effective: rather than build reproductions, historic farmhouses, mills, workshops and outbuildings were taken down where they stood across Salzburg State, transported, and reassembled on a wooded site at the foot of the mountain. The result is not a single village but a walkable cross-section of the whole state, with the building traditions of the Flachgau, Tennengau, Pongau, Pinzgau and Lungau standing within a short walk of each other. Interiors are furnished, and the site is large enough that it takes a half day to see properly.
Above the village the Untersberg closes off the southern view. The mountain’s cable car runs from Grodig on the other flank, so Grossgmain is not the access point for the summit, but the massif dominates the skyline from the museum grounds and from the church.
Regional buses run from Salzburg to Grossgmain in around 30 minutes; the Freilichtmuseum Grossgmain has its own stop. Allow three to four hours for the museum, more with children, and note that it is a large outdoor site where weather matters. The museum is seasonal and closed over parts of the winter, so check current opening before travelling. The pilgrimage church is in the village centre and open outside service times.
