Lofer is a small village in the Salzburger Saalachtal where the mountains look like they have been placed for photographic effect: the Loferer Steinberge rise abruptly above a wide, flat valley floor, their limestone ridges sharp and pale against the sky. The village has been a stop on the trade route between Salzburg and Tyrol for centuries, and its character reflects that quiet, functional history. The Wallfahrtskirche Maria Kirchental hidden in the pine forest above is one of the prettier pilgrimage churches in Salzburg State.
The market charter of 1473 turned what was a road-stop into a proper settlement. Merchants moving between Salzburg’s Prince-Bishops and Tyrol passed through here, and the village grew around that traffic. The Saalach trade route it sat on is old enough that there are medieval ruins at the Strub Pass nearby, built to guard the Tyrol border. Today the historic character is quietly present in the parish church, the old inn buildings on the main street, and the rhythm of a place that has always been oriented toward movement and passage rather than staying put.
The Wallfahrtskirche Maria Kirchental is the destination that sets Lofer apart from similar villages. It sits above the valley in a forest clearing, reachable on foot from the village, and its baroque interior with the 1735 high altar rewards the short climb. The church draws pilgrims throughout the year and hosts harvest blessings that connect it to the agricultural calendar of the valley.
The Almenwelt Lofer ski area is genuinely family-friendly and uncrowded by the standards of the larger Pinzgau resorts. The slopes suit beginners and intermediates, the lift pass prices are reasonable by Austrian standards, and the surrounding landscape is striking even from the valley floor. In summer, the gondola access to the Almenwelt plateau opens hiking terrain with views across to the Loferer Steinberge. A Klettersteig (via ferrata) on the Loferer Steinberge provides something for more ambitious visitors.
Lofer is about 55 kilometres northwest of Salzburg, roughly one hour by car on the B21 road via Hallein and the Saalach valley. There is a regional bus connection but car access is more practical for most visitors. The village centre, the Wallfahrtskirche Maria Kirchental (a 20-to-30-minute walk or short drive up the valley), and the Almenwelt gondola base are all within easy reach of each other. Lofer combines naturally with Saalfelden to the south or with a drive up the Saalach toward Zell am See. It also makes a logical stop for visitors arriving in the Pinzgau from the German border at Lofer or from Berchtesgaden.
