The Story

Salzburg’s Sound of Music tour industry is large and mostly identical: coaches, commentary, rolling past facades. Maria’s Bicycle Tour has run since the 1990s as a different model. Small groups, slow pace, guides who grew up here, and bikes that force you to actually arrive at places rather than observe them through glass.

The route connects stops that matter. Nonnberg Abbey, founded in 714 AD, is where the real Maria Augusta Kutschera was a novice before she became a governess. Schloss Frohnburg on the Hellbrunner Allee served as the Von Trapp exterior in the film. Leopoldskron provided the lake terrace scenes. Mirabell Gardens gave the film “Do-Re-Mi.” The guide distinguishes between authentic history and Hollywood invention, which is the most useful service any Sound of Music tour can offer.

The route is almost entirely flat, runs south along the Salzach and Hellbrunner Allee, and ends at Hellbrunn Palace. 3.5 hours at a pace that leaves room to walk into courtyards and take photographs.

• When: Daily April to October.
• Departs: 9:30 am from Mirabellplatz 4 (50 m left of the Mirabell Palace entrance).
• Cost: Adults €45, teens €25, children under 12 €20. Bikes and helmets included.

• Tips: Morning start recommended. No fitness level required. Child seats and tandems available.
