The Salzburg Festival is one of the most prestigious and expensive classical music events in the world. Headline concerts and opera productions sell out months in advance to subscribers and buyers with deep pockets. The Siemens Festspielleinwand is the institution’s answer to its own exclusivity: a large outdoor screen in Kapitelplatz that broadcasts performances, live or recorded, to anyone who wants to watch.
Kapitelplatz is not a concession. It is the square that sits between the Salzburg Cathedral and the foot of the cliff leading up to Hohensalzburg Fortress. Thousands of people spread blankets, open bottles, and watch opera broadcast onto a screen in one of the most architecturally loaded squares in Central Europe. The experience is not a substitute for being inside the Grosses Festspielhaus; it is a different thing, with its own atmosphere and its own rewards.
Live performance nights are particularly strong. When a major opera is being broadcast in real time and the square is full, there is a collective attention that is unusual and genuinely moving. On those evenings, the free outdoor screen is not the lesser version of the Festival. It is one of the best places to be in Salzburg.

July to August only, during Festival season. Kapitelplatz fills up on live performance evenings; arrive early for a good position. Dress for cool evenings even in summer.
