Monument
A small baroque fountain at the centre of Alter Markt, built in 1734. Depicts Saint Florian of Lorch, patron of Austria, pouring water to extinguish a burning building below. Free and always visible.
Alter Markt is one of the most compact and complete squares in the Altstadt: ringed by narrow historic façades, anchored by Cafe Tomaselli on one corner, and centred on this fountain. The Florianibrunnen is not large. It does not need to be.
Saint Florian of Lorch was a Roman soldier martyred in the late third century for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. The legend attached to him, that he protected buildings from fire by intercession, made him Austria’s most practical patron saint: the protector of fire brigades, chimney sweeps, and anyone whose home or livelihood could burn. The iconography is always the same: armour, a bucket of water, a small building in flames below. The fountain in Alter Markt follows the type precisely, in marble, with the care that Salzburg’s baroque craftsmen brought to even minor public commissions.
Florian fountains appear all across Austria, at village squares, market spaces, and road junctions. This is Salzburg’s most-photographed example, partly for the quality of the carving, partly because Alter Markt frames it so well.
