The Story

In 1475, decades before Martin Luther nailed his theses to a church door and before the Habsburg dynasty had consolidated its grip on Central Europe, someone in Kaltenhausen started brewing beer. Hofbräu Kaltenhausen has been at it ever since. It is the oldest brewery in Salzburg State, a claim that places it ahead of Stiegl (founded 1492) and well ahead of Augustiner Bräu Salzburg.

The brewery sits on the Salzach at the northern edge of Hallein, the salt town that was the economic engine of the archbishopric for centuries. The location was deliberate: running water for the brewing process, proximity to the salt trade routes, and the administrative oversight of the archbishops who held the brewing rights. Today the industrial history is most visible in the Cooperage Museum, which traces the craft of barrel-making, a trade inseparable from brewing in the pre-aluminium era. Guided tours run through the brewery itself, and beer sommelier sessions can be arranged for groups.

The beer garden on the Salzach is the simple, practical reason most visitors come: a good beer in a good setting, on the bank of the river that flows through Salzburg fifteen minutes to the north. The Braugasthof restaurant handles food, with Austrian standards alongside whatever Kaltenhausen is pouring.

The practical combination is Salzwelten (the salt mine on the Dürrnberg above Hallein) plus Kaltenhausen for the afternoon. The S-Bahn from Salzburg to Hallein runs frequently; from Hallein station the brewery is a short walk north along the Salzach.

On Salzburger Straße 67, Kaltenhausen, just north of Hallein. Approximately 15 minutes from Salzburg by S-Bahn (alight Hallein, walk north along the Salzach).
