Hotel Hofwirt has been welcoming travelers at the edge of Salzburg’s Neustadt since 1878. Its 111 rooms occupy a former merchant’s house on Schallmooser Hauptstraße, and the inn’s courtyard, breakfast terrace, and unhurried front-desk manner still feel more like a family Gasthof than a managed property.

The Story

Josef Hofwirt opened the inn in 1878 on a pedestrian lane that connected the old market to Salzburg’s new railway station, giving arriving travelers a logical first stop before reaching the center. The building’s limestone-and-timber construction was modest but practical, and early records suggest it catered to merchants and curious tourists in roughly equal measure.

The Gmachl family entered the picture in the early 20th century and are associated with the property’s long-running stewardship across several generations. They reportedly kept original woodwork, brass fixtures, and the stone cellar intact through successive renovations, including repairs needed after WWII damage left the façade cracked. A more substantial renovation around 2007 modernised the 111-room layout while preserving the historic character that distinguishes it from chain hotels.

The hotel’s position makes it a practical base during the Salzburg Festival: Grosses Festspielhaus and the Domplatz stage for the annual Jedermann performance are reachable on foot in under 15 minutes. For everyday exploration, Mirabell Gardens is a 5-minute walk and Mozarts Birthplace roughly 10.

Visiting

Schallmooser Hauptstraße 1, just east of the river in the Neustadt. Mid-range pricing. Breakfast buffet included; good variety reported by guests. Pets welcome on request. The sun terrace and courtyard garden are worth using if weather allows. Combine with a walk across Staatsbrücke to the Altstadt.
