A four-generation family hotel in a 15th-century merchant house on Kaigasse, tucked into the quieter lanes behind Salzburg Cathedral. One of the more characterful mid-range options inside the historic core, with wellness facilities that are unusual for this address tier.

The Story

The building at Kaigasse 7 appears in city records as early as 1429, when it was documented as a Bürgerhaus, the kind of solid, stone-fronted merchant residence that defined the southern Altstadt’s street fabric before the baroque era reshaped the skyline. When the current owner family purchased it in 1899, they paid around 24,000 Gulden and took on a structure whose vaulted entrance and original timber beams were already four centuries old. Four generations later, the facade remains substantially intact, a protected landmark in a city where landmark status is genuinely common, yet the interior has been gradually updated with air-conditioning, a lift, and modernised bathrooms.

The location on Kaigasse places guests in one of the calmer pedestrian lanes of the southern Altstadt, close to Nonnberg Abbey and the Salzach embankment, yet removed from the foot traffic of Getreidegasse. Mozart’s Birthplace is roughly a ten-minute walk north; the Salzburg Cathedral is three minutes on foot. The Altstadt can be explored entirely on foot from here.

What distinguishes the Wolf from other Altstadt addresses at its price tier is the wellness offer: a 7-metre indoor pool with counter-current system, Finnish sauna, steam bath, infrared cabin, and 24-hour gym are reported to be the only such combination inside the Altstadt itself. Massage sessions can be booked in-house, running from around 50 to 60 minutes.

The sixteen rooms range from compact singles to gallery suites above 40 square metres, with Nespresso machines, minibars, and the choice between street-facing and quieter courtyard-facing positions. Guests with noise sensitivity should request the courtyard side; midweek stays tend to be quieter than festival-weekend arrivals.
