The university chapel of Salzburg University, founded in 1620 and tucked inside the Baroque university complex next to Kollegienkirche, is almost always locked. The exception is Sunday mornings at 11:30am, when an English-language Mass opens the doors to one of the few regular English-language Catholic services in the city.
The Story
When Paris Lodron founded the university in 1620, a private chapel was part of the founding complex. The Sacellum, named from the Latin for a small sacred precinct, served the university's internal liturgical life rather than the city's general population. It sits within the Baroque building ensemble on Universitatsplatz, directly adjacent to Kollegienkirche, which served the university's more public ceremonial functions.
The chapel remained a secondary, semi-private space throughout its history. Unlike the great Baroque churches of Salzburg, it was built to function rather than to impress. The interior contains a Baroque altar and period furnishings consistent with a 17th-century institutional chapel, and the scale is appropriately modest.
For most visitors, the Sacellum is effectively inaccessible: it stays locked outside of Mass. The one reliable opening is the English-language Mass on Sundays at 11:30am. For an English-speaking visitor who wants to attend Catholic services in Salzburg, this is the most practical option in the city. For those interested in the university's early Baroque history, it offers a glimpse of a founding-era room that has not been transformed by later ambitions.
