Stadtalm Hostel
Snapshot
A hostel on the Mönchsberg plateau, attached to the Stadtalm café. Dormitory accommodation above the city. The Monchsberg Lift reaches the Altstadt in under a minute.
The Story
Most hostels in a historic city have one selling point: location near the sights. The Stadtalm Hostel has two: it sits on a wooded plateau above the Altstadt, with forested walking paths and a panoramic terrace outside the door, and it is still less than a minute from street level by lift.
The Monchsberg Lift drops to Gstättengasse in the Altstadt. The Museum der Moderne is next door. The Stadtalm mountain café is adjacent. The walking paths that run the length of the Mönchsberg ridge, south toward Hohensalzburg Fortress and north toward the Monchsberg Aussichtsterrasse, begin at the door.
For budget travellers this is a straightforward argument: dormitory prices, hotel-quality setting, and a view of the city that most people in Salzburg pay considerably more to be near. The trade is the standard hostel trade: shared facilities, no room service, early check-out. The setting makes the trade easy.
