Bergheim is a small town north of Salzburg in the Flachgau plain, known primarily for the Wallfahrtskirche Maria Plain on the Plainberg hill above it. The twin-towered baroque pilgrimage church is visible for kilometres, commands an exceptional view south toward the Alps, and carries a direct Mozart connection through the "Coronation Mass" he composed for a ceremony here in 1779.
The Story
The Plainberg hill north of Salzburg has been a pilgrimage destination since the 17th century, when a venerated image of the Virgin Mary was installed in the small chapel that preceded the current church. The Wallfahrtskirche Maria Plain was built in the late 17th and early 18th centuries as a full pilgrimage church, and its twin baroque towers became one of the defining landmarks of the northern Salzburg basin.
Mozart's connection is specific: he composed the Mass in C Major (KV 317) in 1779 for the ceremony marking the crowning of the miraculous image. The mass is now commonly called the "Coronation Mass" after this connection, and it is one of the most frequently performed of his sacred works. For visitors interested in the Mozart heritage, Wallfahrtskirche Maria Plain offers a dimension that is often overlooked in favour of the city-centre sites.
The church's terrace offers one of the better north-of-the-city views toward the Salzburg panorama: the alpine chain visible to the south, Salzburg spread across the basin, and the Untersberg anchoring the right side of the frame. The pilgrimage function of the church is still active; on major Marian feast days the path up the hill carries processions.
Planning
Bergheim is around 7 kilometres north of Salzburg and is served by the Salzburg Lokalbahn (light rail), making it a straightforward half-day excursion without a car. From the Bergheim station the hill and church are a short walk or a moderate uphill climb. The church is generally open to visitors outside of services. The view from the terrace is best on clear days when the alpine peaks are visible; the same excursion in overcast weather loses much of its impact. Bergheim combines naturally with a walk along the Salzach north of the city, or as an add-on to a day that starts in Salzburg and works outward through the Flachgau.
