The Story
The yellow coaches parked on Mirabellplatz belong to Panorama Tours, Salzburg’s largest and longest-established tour operator. The company started in 1954 as a local shuttle service called Kleinbusse Mirabell, running routes out of the city. In spring 1964, and again during the main shoot in 1965, it transported part of the Sound of Music film crew, including logistics for the production moving between locations. When the film became a global phenomenon and tourists arrived wanting to see the filming sites, Panorama already knew every route. The Original Sound of Music Tour has run continuously since 1972.
Today it remains the first choice for coach-based tourism in Salzburg: the flagship Sound of Music tour runs daily at 9:15 am and 2:00 pm from Mirabellplatz, covering Mirabell Gardens, Schloss Leopoldskron, Nonnberg Abbey, Hellbrunn Palace, and the wedding church at Mondsee. Day trips reach Hallstatt, Berchtesgaden, the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, and the salt mines. The hop-on hop-off bus loops the historic center. Private tours, concert tickets, and hotel transfers are also available.
The company is family-run. The Herzl family manages it from its office on Schrannengasse, with the bus terminal at Hubert-Sattler-Gasse 1. For visitors who want the big-coach experience, the established route, and the soundtrack playing on board, Panorama is the standard. For a smaller, more personal alternative, see Bob’s Special Tours.
