Schober

The Schober rises above the eastern shore of the Fuschlsee to 1,328 m, the dominant peak of the lake basin. It is a proper mountain day: steeper and longer than the Ellmaustein across the water, with a summit view that opens in every direction across the Salzkammergut.

The Story

The Fuschlsee basin has two hiking peaks facing each other across the water. The Ellmaustein on the western shore is the gentler option, accessible in a shorter ascent. The Schober on the eastern shore is the serious one: around 2-3 hours of ascent on a trail that climbs steeply from the lake edge, with no lift or cable car assistance.

The trailhead is on the eastern shore of the Fuschlsee, accessible from Fuschl am See on foot. The route gains elevation quickly and requires proper footwear: not a casual walk in trainers. The reward at 1,328 m is a summit platform with views that are wider and more layered than anything available at lake level. The Fuschlsee sits directly below. To the southeast, the Wolfgangsee and the Schafberg are both visible. The Untersberg dominates to the west, with the Salzburg plain behind it. East and northeast, the Salzkammergut chain extends across the horizon.

The ascent is best undertaken between May and October in settled weather. From Salzburg, allow a full day: travel to Fuschl, the climb, and the return.
