The experience

What it is

One week each January, entirely Mozart, in the city where he was born. Organised by the Stiftung Mozarteum, attended by serious Mozart enthusiasts from across the world, and set against a Salzburg that is quiet, affordable, and briefly returned to itself.

The Story

Mozart was born in Salzburg on 27 January 1756. Each year, in the days around that anniversary, the Stiftung Mozarteum organises a concentrated week of Mozart programming that draws leading conductors, soloists, and chamber ensembles to the Mozarteum concert halls and other Salzburg venues. Every programme in every venue for the duration of the festival is Mozart. Nothing else.

This single-composer focus is what distinguishes the Mozartwoche from the broader Salzburg Festival. The summer Festival presents Mozart alongside many other composers across an enormous programme; the Mozartwoche narrows everything down to one question: what can this music do when it has the full attention of the world's best interpreters for one concentrated week in the city that produced it?

The festival attracts specialists and serious enthusiasts rather than general summer tourism. Programming regularly features lesser-performed works alongside the canonical concertos and symphonies. The scholarly and artistic ambition is high. And January in Salzburg is genuinely, practically different from July: the hotel rates are at their lowest, the queues at the main sights are short, and the city runs at a pace that allows it to be understood rather than survived.

Visiting

Book through mozarteum.at. Tickets for headline concerts sell out; book well in advance. January dates vary slightly each year around 27 January. The Mozarteum is the primary venue; check programme for additional venues in Grosses Festspielhaus and elsewhere. Combine with visits to Mozarts Birthplace and Mozarts Residence for full biographical context.
