A small baroque tower at the summit of Kapuzinerberg, built in 1629, now a seasonal beer garden with panoramic views over the Altstadt. The 25-minute walk earns you one of the more character-laden terraces in the city, at a structure that was never built for sitting and drinking.
The Story
In the 1620s, Archbishop Paris Lodron undertook a systematic fortification of Salzburg's hills as the Thirty Years War spread anxiety across the region. The Kapuzinerberg, rising on the right bank of the Salzach opposite the Altstadt, was enclosed with a defensive wall and a series of towers and bastions. The Franziskischlössl was one of these: a modest lookout structure at the summit of the hill, built in 1629.
The fortifications were never seriously tested. The walls fell into disuse over the following centuries. Most were absorbed into the landscape of the hill's walking paths. The Franziskischlössl survived, and at some point acquired a more agreeable purpose: a terrace, some tables, and a licence to serve beer.
Today it operates as a seasonal beer garden from roughly May to October, open in the warmer months when the terrace facing south and west over the city is the reason to be there. The view takes in the Altstadt rooftops, the baroque towers of the churches, and the Untersberg massif beyond. From Kapuzinerberg the proportions of the city are different than from Monchsberg: lower, closer, more intimate.
The thirty-minute walk up from Linzer Gasse passes the Capuchin monastery and several other viewpoints on the hill. The Franziskischlössl sits at the top as the natural reward for the ascent.
