Hotel Jedermann takes its name from Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s morality play, performed every summer at the Salzburg Festival on the steps of the Cathedral. The name is an honest signal: this is a hotel run by people who care about Salzburg’s cultural identity, not just its tourist traffic.

The Story

The hotel sits on Rupertgasse in the Schallmoos district, a quiet residential quarter between the Hauptbahnhof and the historic centre. The Jedermann connection runs deeper than the name: Max Reinhardt staged the first performance in 1920 despite post-war scarcity, and the play has anchored the Salzburg Festival ever since. Guests at this hotel are a 15-minute walk from Domplatz where that tradition continues each August.

The property has been owner-operated across its history. Current managers Karin Mudrich and Doris Jenke took over around 2011 and maintained the personal, hands-on approach that distinguishes it from chain hotels. Rooms were individually styled rather than batch-designed; a garden conservatory serves breakfast with homemade jams and locally sourced produce. Renovations in 2020 and 2024 refreshed interiors without sacrificing the character of the historic façade. The hotel earned its Ecolabel certification in 2021.

The 32 rooms spread across the main building and an annex. The garden and conservatory, the fireplace in cooler months, and the unhurried breakfast service give the property a warmth that is harder to manufacture than it looks.

Rupertgasse 25, Schallmoos, about 10 minutes’ walk from the Hauptbahnhof and 15 from the Altstadt. Mid-range pricing. Breakfast in the conservatory or garden. Parking available at a daily rate. Bus lines 2 and 4 stop nearby. Combine with a visit to Mirabell Gardens en route to the old town.
