The Loreto Church on the right bank was founded in 1633 by Capuchin nuns who fled the Thirty Years' War. Its plain facade conceals a replica of the Santa Casa, the legendary house of the Virgin Mary, and a 17th-century jewelled Madonna doll that has drawn local pilgrims for nearly four centuries.
The Story
When the Thirty Years' War destroyed their convent in Landshut in 1632, a group of Capuchin nuns needed somewhere to go. Archbishop Paris Lodron offered land on the right bank of the Salzach, and the cornerstone was laid in September 1633. The church was completed in 1646, the convent in 1648. It was, by the standards of the period, quickly built: the nuns worked under constant threat from the wider conflict, and Salzburg's position as a Catholic enclave surrounded by Protestant armies gave urgency to the project.
At the center of the church sits a replica of the Santa Casa, the legendary house of the Virgin Mary said to have been transported from Nazareth to Loreto in Italy. The tradition of building such replicas had spread across Catholic Europe through the 16th and 17th centuries as an act of Counter-Reformation devotion. The Salzburg version was always intended as a pilgrimage point.
The most unusual object in the church is the Loretokindl: a 17th-century jewelled puppet of the Madonna dressed in elaborately embroidered robes. The figure has been an object of veneration since the mid-1600s and continues to draw visitors today. A daily blessing at 2:30pm was historically associated with it.
The exterior follows Capuchin Franciscan austerity: plain stone, minimal ornament. The 1685 marble portal carries Archbishop Max Gandolph von Kuenburg's coat of arms, with small cherubs barely visible in the weathered stone. During the French occupation in 1800, the complex briefly served as barracks and a munitions depot, a disruption the community survived.
The convent remains active. The church is one of the quieter sacred spaces on the right bank.
Visiting
On Paris-Lodron-Strasse on the right bank, a short walk north from Mirabellplatz. Free entry for prayer during daytime hours. The Santa Casa replica and the Loretokindl Madonna are the two things to find inside. The atmosphere is contemplative; the convent is active. Combine with Mirabell Palace and Mirabell Gardens nearby.
