The Story
The lift from Anton-Neumayr-Platz takes less than sixty seconds. You step out onto the Mönchsberg at 32 metres above the Altstadt, and M32 is immediately in front of you.
The restaurant was designed by Matteo Thun, the Italian architect whose studio has spent decades finding the register between Alpine materiality and contemporary restraint. The interior works: dark wood, floor-to-ceiling glass that removes the boundary between inside and outside, a spherical chandelier, 180 seats in a space that feels calm rather than designed. The terrace holds 240 people and faces north and east across the city.
The view is the point. The Cathedral dome, the Fortress on its hill, the Salzach winding through the city, and the Alps arranged behind it all: at sunset, with the light going horizontal across the stone and tile, this is one of the more straightforward visual arguments for Salzburg's stature that the city produces. It does not require any particular expertise to read.
The food and drink at M32 carry a Gault Millau rating of 12.5/20 (2026). This is accurate and sufficient: the kitchen produces competent food at prices that reflect the view and the setting rather than the cooking. The honest recommendation is a coffee or a drink on the terrace if the budget is finite, and a full meal if it is not.
