Schloss Frohnburg provided the front door of the Von Trapp home in The Sound of Music, while Schloss Leopoldskron supplied the lake terrace. The two buildings were cut together to create a single fictional house. Frohnburg is now a student residence and not open to the public.
The Story
When the filmmakers needed a Von Trapp villa, they used two buildings. Schloss Leopoldskron had the lakeside terrace and the rear garden, the scenes that became iconic. Schloss Frohnburg, a baroque manor house on Hellbrunner Allee in the Nonntal district, provided what Leopoldskron could not: a formal front entrance, a driveway, a gate, and the sequence where Maria first arrives to meet the family.
The two buildings are less than two kilometres apart and quite different in character. Leopoldskron is Rococo in its interior richness; Frohnburg is quieter, more classical in its proportions, sitting below the steep cliff of Nonnberg Abbey in a neighbourhood of villas and gardens.
The building dates from the 17th century and has changed hands many times. The Universität Mozarteum now owns it and uses it as a student residence. There is no museum function, no public access, and no formal Sound of Music signage. Most people on coach tours do not know it exists.
For anyone walking or cycling the Hellbrunner Allee, the facade is visible from the road. The approach through tree-lined grounds gives enough of a sense of the building to understand why it was chosen: the right scale, the right period, the right Austrian gravitas.

Not open to the public. Hellbrunner Allee 53, in Nonntal, accessible on foot or by bicycle from central Salzburg. The facade is visible from the road. Combine with Schloss Leopoldskron and Nonnberg Abbey, both within walking distance.
