Village 6 km south of Salzburg, about 20 minutes by bus. Home to Schloss Anif, a neo-Gothic water palace reflected in its moat. King Ludwig III signed his abdication here in 1918. Herbert von Karajan lived and died here in 1989. The palace was used as the von Trapp villa exterior in The Sound of Music.

The Story

Anif does not announce itself. It sits in the flat basin south of Salzburg where the mountains have not yet started in earnest, and the road through it is unremarkable. But Schloss Anif appears without warning: a neo-Gothic castle on a moated island, its pointed towers and decorative stonework reflected in still water, surrounded by meadow. The original structure dates to the 16th century, then served as an archbishop’s summer residence before Count Arco-Stepperg reshaped it into the Romantic-era spectacle visible today.

The palace has been private for generations, so visitors see it from outside. The view is enough. The pond and the reflection do the work.

Two historical moments ran through this village. In November 1918, King Ludwig III of Bavaria came to Schloss Anif to sign the declaration that ended his reign and dissolved one of Europe’s longest-standing royal houses. The Wittelsbach abdication happened here, in this quiet village six kilometres from Salzburg.

Herbert von Karajan spent the later decades of his life here. The conductor who defined the sound of the Berlin Philharmonic for 35 years chose Anif. His grave is at the parish church, and the village keeps its relationship with his memory low-key, which suits both.

Planning

Anif is reached by bus from Salzburg centre in about 20 minutes, line 10 direction Anif. The palace is visible from the road and the surrounding paths but is not open to visitors. The village is small and does not warrant a full day; it works well as a brief stop en route south, or combined with a visit to the Salzburg Airport area. The Schlosswirt Anif, a historic inn adjacent to the palace grounds, has operated since at least the 17th century.
