The Story

The Salzkammergut is the lake district that spreads east and south of Salzburg into the Austrian Alps. It is made up of dozens of lakes set between forested limestone mountains, connected by villages that have been drawing visitors since the Habsburg court started arriving in summer in the 19th century. From Salzburg, it is a logical day excursion: the landscape, the scale, and the cultural connections all make sense as a continuation of what visitors have started to understand in the city.

St. Gilgen on the Wolfgangsee is where Mozart’s mother, Anna Maria Pertl, was born. It is also a Sound of Music filming location. For visitors arriving with both Mozart context from Mozarts Birthplace and Sound of Music awareness from the city tour, St. Gilgen delivers a specific satisfaction: the story continues here, outside the city walls.

Mondsee has the Basilika Mondsee, the Gothic church used for the wedding scene in the 1965 film. The church itself is beautiful, the village is manageable, and the lake is large and visually compelling. Sound of Music visitors who have been building a mental map of filming locations all week come away from this stop with the largest single scene checked.
