The Story
The Goldener Hirsch (Golden Stag) traces its origins to the early 15th century, making it one of the oldest continuously-run inns in Austria. For most of its history it was a respectable but unremarkable inn on Salzburg's busiest commercial street. The transformation came in the mid-20th century under the long stewardship of Countess Harriet Walderdorff, who remodelled the interior with hand-crafted Austrian furnishings, medieval timbers, and a warmth that stood apart from the impersonal grandeur of international luxury hotels. The timing aligned precisely with the rise of the Salzburg Festival as a global institution, and the hotel became the festival world's preferred address.
