Getreidegasse is one of the most photographed streets in Central Europe, and most of what lines it today caters to that fact. Konditorei Schatz is an exception. It operates as a functioning Austrian confectionery, serving coffee and cake to people who actually want coffee and cake, without a gift shop attached.
The Konditorei format is a specific Austrian institution: not a cafe in the Viennese coffeehouse sense, and not a bakery in the northern European sense, but a specialist pastry shop where the cakes are made on the premises and the coffee is incidental to the dessert, not the other way around. Schatz follows that model. The seasonal offering shifts with what the Austrian baking calendar demands, from Faschingskrapfen in January to Weihnachtsgebäck in December.
Being at number 3 on Getreidegasse places it steps from Fürst and at the mouth of the street that leads toward Cafe Tomaselli and Alter Markt. The practical case for Schatz is simple: if there is a queue at Fürst or Tomaselli, there usually is not one here.
Located at Getreidegasse 3, directly on Salzburg’s main pedestrian street in the Altstadt. Open Mon-Sat from morning (verify hours locally). Coffee EUR 3-5, pastries and cakes EUR 3-6. No reservation needed. Pairs naturally with a walk along Getreidegasse toward Alter Markt.
