Tucked into the base of the Mönchsberg cliff at the entrance to Stift St. Peter, the Stiftskeller claims to be the oldest restaurant in Europe, with hospitality on the site documented to 803 AD.
The Story
The claim to 803 AD traces to a record of Alcuin of York, the scholar who served as Charlemagne's chief advisor, noting a meal taken here during a visit to Salzburg. Whether or not it is the single oldest restaurant in the world, hospitality has been offered in this spot for over twelve centuries, long enough for the title to feel earned rather than manufactured.
The dining rooms are a sequence of vaulted stone chambers and rock-cut cellars pressed directly into the Mönchsberg cliff, sharing a courtyard with the Abbey church and the Petersfriedhof beyond. The walls are thick, the ceilings low in places, and the candlelight is doing exactly what it was doing in the 18th century. Mozart is believed to have dined here regularly, and the restaurant still marks that connection with Mozart Dinner Concerts: period-costumed musicians perform in the Baroque rooms while guests work through a set menu. The concert is a tourist format, transparently so, but the setting makes it work in a way that a purpose-built dinner-show venue never could.
The regular restaurant is a separate and genuinely good option. The kitchen runs modern Austrian, the courtyard is one of the Altstadt's better outdoor tables in summer, and the association with the Benedictine monks of Stift St. Peter has been continuous since the beginning.
